Some facts on Ireland’s alcohol consumption

Ireland is one the highest consumers of alcohol worldwide. In the 10 years to 2006, alcohol consumption per capita increased by 48%.
- Alcohol related problems costs the State €3 billion pa.
- Alcohol linked to over 70% of cases of domestic violence.
- Alcohol is linked to over 80% of public order offenses.

Anti-drink campaigns ‘woefully inadequate’
There has been enough talk, enough reports, and enough studies. Alcohol-related problems increase in periods of economic downturn. Hundreds of thousands of tax payers Euro have been spent on projects and policies around this issue.
ARI’s contention that much of this spending is ineffective appears to be advocated according to this report. In a time of such shortages of funds, no less indeed than any other time, it behoves us to review such expenditure and support appropriate, effective action.
The following issues we have constantly highlighted and requested action on have sadly proved to have materialised. It’s time for new thinking.
